A Night time Cityscape Art Lesson
One of my favourite subjects to teach at school is of course art. I love the opportunity to structure a lesson which enables children to learn new skills and at the same time enable their creativity.
Recently in grade 6 I taught a lesson on making Cityscapes.
This is how we created them.
Art Materials
Step 1.
Introduce the children to cityscapes. Explore visual representations. We looked at some photographs.
We also looked at a painting created by Heather Galler. We compared the photograph and the painting. We discussed similarities and differences.
Step Two.
Using acrylic paint we painted the base (white cartridge paper) a dark blue.
Step Three
We talked about shapes, placement and and perspective. Then the children chose three colours of cardboard and cut out a variety of rectangular and triangular shapes.
Step Four.
They placed and glued down their shapes.
Step 5.
Using a variety of textas and paint pens they drew in the windows, stars and snow.
Initially there were some very specific instructions. However, I still left plenty of opportunity for them to tap into their own creative wells. This led to some very pleasing creative results.
Most importantly the students enjoyed the creative process. What can your students create today with some coloured card, paint and markers?
